Tipping Recommendations in the United States
Tipping is a practice that happens in the United States, and is used to reward individuals for good service. Going out to eat at a restaurant, getting your hair cut, or even having a pizza delivered to your apartment are all considered to be services worthy of a tip.
Unlike other countries, the United States does not traditionally include a gratuity in the price of a meal at restaurants. Some restaurants will add this fee to the meal price if you go as a large group of people, and it will be listed on the bill. Generally, it is recommended to tip 15 percent to 20 percent of the total bill (including tax) if the waiter service was good. This amount can decrease for services considered to be below average.
Here are some additional tipping guidelines in the United States for services students may use:
* Taxis - the recommended tip is 15 percent of the fare.
* Salon/barber 15 percent of the bill, although if you have additional people helping with your style, like someone who shampoos your hair, its recommended to tip with $1 or $2.
* Fast food delivery When you have food delivered to your door in the time promised, give the delivery person $1 to $2 for a short drive and $3 for longer driving distances. If the order is a large order, add another dollar or two to reward the service.
* Shuttle drivers to and from the airport If the driver helps you with your bags, it is recommended to give the driver $1 to $2 per bag. This is also the case if you take a shuttle to pick up a rental car.
There are many additional guidelines. Visit www.tipping.org/tips/us.html for additional recommendations. But always keep in mind, a tip is designed to show appreciation for good service, and should not be an expected payment.
